The more regularly people report doing word puzzles such as crosswords, the better their brain function in later life, a large-scale and robust online trial has found. Experts at the University of Exeter Medical School and Kings College London analyzed data from more than 17,000 healthy people aged 50 and over, submitted in an online trial. In research presented at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC) 2017, the team asked participants how frequently they played word puzzles such as crosswords. (July 17, 2017)

Food for Thought: Chocolate and Your Brain
Adding dark chocolate to your daily diet could benefit your brain, according to Italian researchers. “Regular intake of cocoa and chocolate could indeed provide beneficial effects on cognitive functioning over time,” said researchers from the University of L’Aquila in Italy. Studies have found that the cocoa bean is a rich source of flavanols, a class of natural compounds that can have neuroprotective effects.
